Amazon FBA prep is the process of preparing your products to meet Amazon's specific packaging, labeling, and shipping requirements before sending them to an Amazon fulfillment center.
Amazon needs products to arrive in a specific condition so they can be received, stored, and shipped efficiently within their massive warehouse network. If products don't meet these standards, Amazon will either refuse the shipment, apply additional prep fees, or flag your seller account.
FBA prep includes several key components. FNSKU labeling is the unique barcode Amazon assigns to your product that links it to your seller account. Every unit must have an FNSKU label that's scannable and properly placed. Polybagging is required for products that could be damaged by dust or moisture, or products with multiple loose parts. Suffocation warning labels are mandatory on poly bags of a certain size. Bundling and kitting involves combining multiple items into a single sellable unit when you're selling product bundles. Box preparation means proper packaging with appropriate void fill, weight limits, and box dimensions that meet Amazon's guidelines. And palletizing means for large shipments, products must be properly palletized according to Amazon's specifications.
Amazon's requirements are detailed and specific. Here are the most common prep steps that sellers need to handle:
Every individual unit needs an FNSKU barcode that is scannable from at least 6 inches away. Items in poly bags must have suffocation warnings and the bags must be transparent. Products with expiration dates must have the date printed in 36-point or larger font, visible without opening the packaging. Sets and bundles must be clearly labeled as sets so Amazon doesn't separate them. Sharp items need protective packaging. Liquids need to be double-sealed. And all boxes must weigh under 50 pounds and fit within Amazon's dimensional requirements.
The consequences of non-compliance are real: rejected shipments delay your inventory availability, unplanned prep fees eat into your margins, and repeated violations can impact your seller account standing.
Handling FBA prep yourself is feasible at small scale — if you're sending a few hundred units, labeling and polybagging in your living room works. But as volume increases, the economics shift dramatically.
DIY prep requires space for materials and work tables, time for each unit that scales linearly with volume, knowledge of Amazon's changing requirements which update regularly, equipment like label printers, heat sealers for poly bags, and palletizing capability, and the risk of errors that you catch after Amazon rejects a shipment.
An FBA prep center handles all of this at scale. They have the equipment, the trained staff, the knowledge of current Amazon requirements, and the volume to do it efficiently. Most prep centers charge per unit — typically $0.50 to $2.00 per unit depending on the complexity of prep required.
The break-even point for most sellers is around 200-500 units per shipment. Below that, DIY might be more cost-effective. Above that, a prep center saves you time, reduces errors, and gets your products into Amazon faster.
